Nappy Lingo

From the obvious to the more obscure some terms for your digestion...

Nappy Parts:

The Nappy: The absorbent part. Traditionally a folded & pinned terry square, more modern varieties are shaped & fastened with poppers, velcro / aplix, or special hook fasteners called nappy nippas.

The Liner: The poo-catcher. Helps protect the nappy from the poo. There are two types: flushable & re-useable. The flushable variety are similar to tissue paper but more durable. The re-useable varieties are made of fleece, which has the added benefit of providing a stay-dry layer.

The Wrap: The waterproof part. Goes over the entire nappy to make it all watertight & leak-proof. They now come in a great range of funky designs & generally fasten with convenient velcro (aplix) or side poppers.

The Booster: To provide extra absorbency. A booster is a pad placed into the nappy to add absorbency. As baby grows & is eating & drinking more they will also wee more. Start by using these at first overnight & then eventually during the daytime as well.

Other nappy terms:

Nappi Nippa: To replace pins. A plastic device that hooks onto the nappy fabric securing in 3 places. (For use on nappies that don’t already have poppers / velcro (aplix) fastening) No need for pins anymore, as the natty nappi nippa provides a safer alternative. Gives a nice snug nappy fit.

Nappy Pail: A lidded bucket to store your nappies.

Nappy Mesh: A very handy net. Put one of these in your nappy bucket & add dirty nappies as you go. When full you can transfer all of the nappies as a bundle into the machine, nappies fall out as they wash.

Dry Pailing: Convenient alternative to soaking. After a quick rinse store the nappies in the net in an empty bucket. (see dry pailing vs soaking in Cloth Explained drop down menu)
